+In the preface, Kleinberg and Tardos outline their motivation and goals for writing Algorithm Design. They begin by first talking about the many applications of algorithms in real life. However, they quickly state that algorithms' many applications isn't the point of the book, but rather that algorithms are a lens in which we can view Computer Science in general. There are two issues in dealing with algorithms: getting to the mathematical center of the problem and then "identifying the appropriate algorithm design techniques". This book wants us to be able to find the underlying motivation for an algorithm problem and how we were able to recognize the appropriate design principles for the underlying scenario. Kleinberg and Tardos's ultimate goal "is to offer advice on how to identify clean algorithmic problem formulations in complex issues" and how to design efficient algorithms in all sorts of situations.
+The preface was well-written and clearly outlines the purpose of the textbook and its motivations. I am excited to learn more about algorithms from Kleinberg and Tardos given their experience and knowledge of the material. I'd give this section a 10/10 on readability and a 7/10 on being interesting.
